Nicolas Copernicus was born in Torun, Polund on February 19, 1473. He grew up as the son of a merchant and had two sisters and one brother. Copernicus never got married. He got a degree from University of Krakow in astronomy and math. He also studied law, medicine and even earned his doctoroate. He also provided much of the basis for today's scientific theory's. Copernicus died on May 24, 1543.

Heliocentric Model

Copernicus formulated the first heliocentric model of the Universe. This model explained that our Sun is the center of the Universe and everything was located in a position relative to the Sun. All the other stars in the Universe were located in stationary positions. The planets rotated in the same direction around the Sun. His model said that all of the planets rotate around the Sun in one year orbits.

 

Copernican Theory

He wrote a book, De revilutionibus orbium coelestium, that was published in the year of his death, 1543. This book had had an amazing impact on the history of human knowledge. Some people suggest that this work could be one of the most influential ever. The book include a theory which had seven points. These points included:

 

  1. There is no one center in the universe
  2. The Earth's center is not the center of the universe
  3. The center of the universe is near the sun
  4. The distance from the Earth to the sun is imperceptible compared with the distance to the stars
  5. The rotation of the Earth accouns for the apparent daily rotation of the stars
  6. The apparent annual cycle of movements of the sun is caused by the Earth revolving around the sun
  7. The apparent retrograde motion of the planets is caused by the motion of the Earth, from which on observese
